Online Resource Troubleshooting

Remote access to some of our Online Resources uses referring URL authentication to let authorized users into the resource. Referring URL authentication checks the information sent by your web browser to make sure you are connecting from an authorized and subscribed institution. If the referring URL information is not present, you will get an error, likely caused by a software firewall, other security software, or improper web browser configuration.

Here are some things to try if you are having difficulties.

Norton Firewall Software Microsoft Internet Explorer Trusted URL domains

Norton Internet Security / Norton Personal Firewall

If you are using a Norton software firewall, it's possible that it is stopping your web browser from sending referring URL information. This information is needed to access some of our Online Resources.

To stop Norton from blocking referring URL information:

1. Open Norton.
2. Access the Privacy Control section.
3. Click Configure.
4. Click Custom Level.
5. Uncheck Enable Browser Privacy.
6. Click OK and close Norton.

It's also possible that the Norton software is blocking a site deemed to be not trusted. You can configure the Norton software to accept sites that you know are trusted.

To setup a trusted site in Norton:

1. Open Norton.
2. Access the Privacy Control section.
3. Click Configure.
4. Click Advanced.
5. Click Add Site.
6. Enter the URL of the trusted site (ie..  http://www.southhollandlibrary.org).
7. Click OK and close Norton.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

Browser configuration errors can also cause website access problems.
Below you'll find the steps to take to ensure that your Internet Explorer browser (version 6.0 or newer) is configured properly.

1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click the Tools menu and select Internet Options.
3. In the Internet Options window, Click the Privacy tab, then click the Advanced button.
4. In the Advanced Privacy Settings window, check the box next to Override automatic cookie handling.
5. Click OK twice to close both settings windows.
